[Event Report] Creating desk accessories using welding and painting!

We held a "One-Day Hands-On Workshop" where participants visited welding and painting factories to create desk accessories, and here's our report!
Our customer this time said that their job involves welding and painting, and they are also interested in DIY, so they decided to participate because they thought "it would be great to be able to experience it myself."
Welding where feel is important
We'll start with a welding factory. First, they'll explain the basics of welding and what kind of work they do on a daily basis.
As expected from a company that makes custom-made decorative metalwork, the company's meeting space is filled with iron desks, windows, and doors made by the employees themselves.Beautiful! The customer was asking lots of questions.
Today we'll be doing TIG welding. First, let's try it out.
Then, with the support of skilled craftsmen, we proceed with the welding!
And this is the pen holder I made!
It's lunchtime now. I had lunch at Fuse Station, the face of Higashi-Osaka.
Next stop: the paint shop!
Painting makes it a "beauty."
First, we start with "degreasing." This removes dirt and oil. This kind of pre-treatment is important for a clean paint job.
I learned how to use a spray gun from a craftsman and tried painting on a can. It's difficult to get a smooth, even coat!
Then came the main event, and I was so nervous. I started painting the pen holder I had made.
This is after the primer coat has been applied.
Once the painting is done, it's placed in this huge furnace for "baking"! Heat is applied to the resin of the paint film, and the coating hardens as it bakes.
While waiting for the paint to set for about 40 minutes... The company president gave a short painting lesson!
"Thanks for your business! We'll make it look beautiful with putty and paint and return it to you in good condition!" The president, who always speaks in a cheerful Kawachi dialect, brings smiles to the faces of the participants.
What are the different types and roles of "painting," and what motivates people to approach their work as painters? What constitutes "good skill"?
"I don't usually say this, but... I'm offering it as a service today!" He shared various questions and thoughts, which made me think about what technology really is.
And so, this pen holder has become a real beauty! The matte finish looks great.
We spent the entire day, from morning till evening, visiting welding and painting workshops in town. When I asked the participants how it went, they said...
"I learned things I didn't know before, so today was a fulfilling day."Doing welding and painting yourself makes a huge difference."I strongly felt that," was one of the comments we received. It seems that they made many discoveries and gained various experiences regarding how to move their hands, their senses, and how to use tools.
